We all get a kick from the feeling of freedom that a bike gives us. Whether we’re commuting to work, riding for fitness or just getting out there for the hell of it, there’s nothing quite like the buzz that travel on two wheels brings us.

As riders ourselves, we can completely understand this. And it got us thinking. What can we bring to the experience of riding to make riders feel more confident and less vulnerable on the roads? What do we all need out there to feel safer year-round?

Working with our friends and colleagues at Garmin, this helped inspire the development of Cannondale SmartSense. An intelligent, integrated system of lighting and rear-facing radar that comes with visibility, awareness and confidence built in.

Put simply, the SmartSense system changes your riding experience for the better. And for the safer. Waking up the moment you begin your ride, SmartSense is the ride buddy and companion on the road that you didn’t know you needed but you won’t want to ride without.

Always-On Awareness

Thanks to SmartSense’s always-on, rear-facing Garmin Varia radar, the first thing you’ll notice on the bike is that you no longer need to look over your shoulder as much. As it constantly scans the road behind, the radar alerts you on your head unit of any traffic that’s approaching.

Not only do you now know that a vehicle is there, but you get a sense of the relative speed and proximity of it as it’s approaching. This feature brings with it the added benefit of helping make sure that you’re more engaged with what’s ahead of you and therefore more engaged in enjoying the ride itself. Something we can all appreciate, wherever and however we’re riding.

Visible Benefits

Meanwhile, SmartSense’s reactive, daytime-running lights ensure that drivers and other road users are more aware of you too. Automatically adjusting to the ambient light around you, they also react to input from your rear radar, increasing both the frequency and the brightness of your lights as vehicles approach. Making you instantly more visible to others, without you needing to adapt how you’re riding on the road.
