What’s Tougher: Riding 2,000 km or Really Opening Up?
Covering 2,000 km in seven days is no small feat. But when that ride becomes a documentary, the journey takes on a whole new meaning. How to Eat an Elephant follows filmmaker Gustav Thuesen and his friends as they pedal from Copenhagen to Nice—pushing their physical limits while confronting deeper personal challenges along the way.
"How to Eat a What???"
The film’s title comes from the saying, "There is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time." That’s exactly how the friends approached this ride—one kilometer, one climb, one challenge at a time. But for Gustav, the biggest elephant wasn’t the distance; it was the injury he had kept secret for a decade. An incident in the military when he was 19 left him partially disabled, shaking his confidence and self-worth. And the loss of mobility in his left arm caused him self-image issues that affected him throughout his twenties. Now, after years of growing his confidence mental fortitude through ultra-endurance rides, he’s ready to share his story with his closest friends.
But this award-winning film isn’t just about endurance—it’s about friendship, vulnerability, and redefining masculinity. "Riding 300 km is so much easier than opening up," Gustav admits. "I want to change that." And the world is listening as well as watching. How to Eat an Elephant won Best Nordic Film at the Nordic Adventure Film Festival, with Jury President Bugge Hansen calling it "a powerful film in every aspect."
