Alastair MacKellar

Aussie talent Alastair MacKellar is excited for his first season in the WorldTour. Alastair secured his pro contract with a win on the fourth stage of the Alpes Isère Tour as well as top class results in races such as Flèche Ardennaise and the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc. He is the 2023 Australian under-23 road and time trial champion and has been a consistent competitor in the world’s hardest amateur races. Making it to the WorldTour has been his goal ever since he moved to Europe when he was 19 years old.

His ambitions were first sparked when he went to watch the Tour Down Under as a child. His dad was a cyclist and would take Alastair and his mates to see the race from the roadside. As soon as he saw the peloton race past, Alastair knew that was where he wanted to be.

All of the work he has put in to make his dream come true has now paid off.

For his first WorldTour season, Alastair is going to focus on controlling what he can control and making the most of every chance he gets. Long term, Alastair’s great ambition is to race the Tour de France. He would also love to close the circle and compete in the WorldTour peloton at the Tour Down Under.

He still spends his winters in Australia, hanging out on the beach and rallying cars with his mates. Before the end of the Aussie summer, he’ll head back to Europe, where he now lives, just outside of Nice, France, where he has found beautiful mountain roads to ride, a great group of training buddies, and lots of sun and sea. It’s a great place for Alastair to unwind and get ready to throw himself into all of the WorldTour action.

How did you get into cycling?
My dad sparked my curiosity.

What is your favorite climb?
The Col de Braus. It’s my favorite climb near where I live in Europe. The view of the ocean is special and the switchbacks two kilometers from the top are spectacular.

When a race gets tough, what do you tell yourself?
If I’m suffering, I’m not the only one suffering.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
New York. It’s always been top of the bucket list.

If you weren't a professional cyclist, what would you be?
Ideally, something where I could drive cool cars and get paid. But more realistically, something in property.

Who is your favorite athlete?
Michael Jordan, because he really was the best of all time.

Think about your best teammate ever. What was the quality in them that you appreciated?
A good sense of humor.

Do you have a university degree?
I am currently studying for a business management degree. I should be done this year.

What is your favorite pump-up song?
Meltdown by Drake and Travis.

Giro, Tour, or Vuelta?
Tour. I have never done or even seen any, but the Tour has such a presence. It’s quite special.

What is your favorite word in your native language?
Cobber. It’s not a word, nor is it native. It’s slang but means “mate c´mon” to say “g’day cobber.”
